Sample Information

Spectrochemical Testing recommends the following sample sizes when submitting material for testing:

For Tensile (YTE) Tests

Plate samples should be cut to an optimal size of 11” x 11” squares.

Mark an arrow on the sample to indicate the rolling direction, along with all pertinent information.

When submitting test strips, size must be 1” wide x 10-12” long.

Samples less than 10” in length or having a wall thickness of less than 0.015”must be confirmed by the lab prior to submission.

For Chemistry and Hardness Testing

Optimal sample size is 2” x 2” squares.  Samples less than 2” must be confirmed by the lab prior to submission.

Samples consisting of millings, drillings and/or turnings for chemical analysis must be submitted in the range of 50-75 grams of material.

For all Samples Submitted for Testing

Samples must be as flat as possible and free from excessive surface defects such as deep scratches and gouges.  All pertinent information about the material must be written on the sample or shown on the submittal form.
